Identity of Tumbler Ridge shooter confirmed

The identity of the shooter who killed nine people in Tumbler Ridge has been confirmed as Jesse Van Rootselaar.

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — The identity of the shooter who killed nine people in Tumbler Ridge has been confirmed as Jesse Van Rootselaar.

At a press conference on February 11th at 12:30 p.m., deputy commissioner Dwayne McDonald, the BC RCMP’s commanding officer, said Van Rootselaar was found dead at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School with six victims on February 10th. 

Victims included a teacher and five pupils – three girls and two boys.

Van Rootselaar was an 18-year-old female, previously known to police for mental health reasons.

McDonald confirmed the final death toll is in fact nine, rather than the previously reported ten, after the person who was reported to have died en route to hospital did not succumb to their injuries as believed.
