Warming centre reopens in Dawson Creek as cold weather returns

The Nawican Shelter in Dawson Creek has been reopened on January 22nd, 2026 to help the community during the upcoming cold spell.

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — The City of Dawson Creek has reopened its warming centre after a cold spell has been forecast for the region. 

In a Facebook post, the city shared it has reopened the Nawican Shelter warming centre from January 22th to January 25th. 

The city said this space is meant to help support people in need during the colder months.

This comes after the city had temporarily closed the warming centre on December 28th as temperatures rose.

The Nawican Shelter, located at 1401 102 Avenue, will be operational 24/7. 

Refreshments will be available on-site for the community.

Environment Canada has predicted temperatures to fall to -22 C tonight (January 22nd) with wind chill reaching -23 C in the evening, and -28 C overnight. There is also a risk of frostbite. 

The city first opened the warming centre on December 5th to help the community beat the cold weather.
