FORT NELSON, B.C. — One person has died following a fiery semi-truck crash that forced the complete closure of Highway 97 north of Fort Nelson.
In a press release, the Northern Rockies RCMP said officers received reports on Tuesday, January 20th of a single-vehicle crash involving a northbound semi-truck hauling flammable material near Steamboat Hill.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson, RCMP North District communications officer, previously confirmed to Energeticcity.ca officers were called just before 4:45 a.m.
According to the detachment, the propane tanker truck failed to stop at a mandatory brake check before continuing north. Witnesses later reported seeing a “fireball” in the distance and hearing what sounded like explosions.
The incident resulted in the Alaska Highway being completely blocked in both directions between Tofte Mainline and Recreation Road.
First responders were initially unable to access the scene due to safety concerns. The RCMP said access was only possible once fire crews had secured the area.
After the scene was made safe, it was confirmed the driver of the semi-truck had died.
