Chetwynd General Hospital closes overnight for seven hours

Northern Health reported an emergency room closure in Chetwynd overnight starting on January 6th, the first northeast B.C. ER closure of 2026.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Northern Health has reported the first emergency room closure of 2026 in Chetwynd. 

According to a Facebook post published shortly before 9:30 p.m. on January 6th, the Chetwynd General Hospital closed from 8:40 p.m. on January 6th to 4 a.m. on January 7th. No reason for the closure was given in the post. 

During an emergency room closure, residents are asked to call 911 if in need of life-threatening emergency care for transport to the nearest available facility.

“Any time services are interrupted, our partners in patient transfer and local health services are notified and signage will be in place at the hospital,” the post stated. 

Those requiring non-emergency care are advised to contact their primary care provider to make an appointment. Residents without a family doctor can call the Northern Health Virtual Clinic at 1-844-645-7811, which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

In 2025, Northern Health-operated medical facilities in northeast B.C. closed 51 times for more than 681 hours.
