Fort St. John speed skaters impress at Long Track Canada Cup in Quebec City

The four-day Long Track Canada Cup event from January 3rd to 6th, 2026 featured four speed skaters from Fort St. John on the roster for Team B.C.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A foursome of local speed skaters lit up the oval in Quebec City during the Long Track Canada Cup event.

The event is a national-level speed skating competition concentrating on crowning individual medalists in events such as the 500, 1,000, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the Centre de Glaces Intact Assurance.

Kieran Hanson, Jack Hanson, Matthew Mitchell and Joshua Telizyn, who have each been members of the Fort St. John Speed Skating Club, donned the colours of Team B.C. at the four-day event which began on Saturday, January 3rd.

Mitchell, who raced at the World Junior Speed Skating Championships in Italy nearly a year ago, got off to a great start in the men’s 5,000 metres.

Holding the second fastest time at the 600-metre mark, Mitchell ended up third in the event with a time of 6:44.90.

Joining him in the event was Jack, who finished with a time of 6:47.80, good for sixth place.

Telizyn, who has raced on the world cup circuit, had a pair of top 20 finishes in the 500 and 1,000 metres.

Telizyn finished in 12th spot on the event’s first day in the 500 metres. It was just behind Kieran, who finished in 11th place.

Jack also had a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 metres with a time of 14:15.97. 

The Long Track Canada Cup event in Quebec City will wrap up on Tuesday, January 6th.
