Drivers warned about highway ice after freezing rain

Freezing rain in the Fort Nelson region may result in slippery roads and walkways, including on highways 97 and 77.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Freezing rain was expected in Fort Nelson this morning, which may have resulted in hazardous travelling conditions on highways 97 and 77.

In a December 1st weather advisory, Environment Canada said a Pacific frontal system was bringing freezing rain on the morning of Monday, December 1st, before turning into snow around noon.

According to Environment Canada, two to four millimetres of ice buildup is possible, including along roads on Highway 97 and Highway 77. It may be difficult to detect that surfaces have become icy, creating hazardous travel conditions.

“Roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery,” Environment Canada warned, urging residents and drivers to use extreme caution if travelling.
