‘Staffing challenges’ close Fort Nelson emergency room overnight

The ER at Fort Nelson General Hospital was closed from November 8th to 9th overnight due to “unexpected staffing challenges.”

FORT NELSON, B.C. — The Fort Nelson emergency room was shuttered overnight in a diversion lasting at least 11 hours. 

In a Facebook post at around 8 p.m. on November 8th, Northern Health warned patients that the ER at Fort Nelson General Hospital was already closed due to “unexpected staffing challenges.”

It was due to reopen at 7 a.m. on Sunday, November 9th.

Patients who needed emergency care in the meantime were advised to call 911 for transportation to the nearest available and appropriate facility. The Fort St. John Hospital emergency room is more than 380km away by road. 

This comes in the same weekend that the ER in Chetwynd was temporarily closed and in the same week the emergency room in Dawson Creek was shut for 10 hours.
