Remembrance Day parade returns next week, BC Transit offering free rides to vets

There will be a parade and ceremony on Remembrance Day, November 11th, to pay tribute to fallen Canadian soldiers and celebrate the service of living veterans and active service members.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A celebration commemorating local veterans is set to take place in downtown Fort St. John next week.

The city’s annual Remembrance Day parade and ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11th.

The annual holiday memorializes fallen Canadian soldiers and celebrates the service of living veterans and active service members.

The parade, which is being organized by the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, will begin outside the School District 60 office on 102nd Street.

From there, it will move past the nearby legion building via 105th Avenue, reach City Hall, then return to the cenotaph for an outdoor ceremony.

After the ceremony, attendees will be invited inside the legion for a day of activities. Listed attractions on the City of Fort St. John’s website include horse races, a turkey shoot and dinner. The event is free to attend with no pre-registration required.

According to a press release from the city, road closures will be in effect along the parade route and near the legion building from 9:30 a.m. to noon on the 11th, with no vehicle access whatsoever.

Meanwhile, BC Transit has also announced it plans to operate on a reduced schedule throughout the city on Remembrance Day, adding that transit services will be free that day to all veterans and active service members in uniform.

For residents who want to celebrate but aren’t interested in a parade, a fully indoor ceremony is also being held in Taylor at the community hall starting at 10:30 a.m.
