Dawson Creek hospital emergency room to shutter for 10 hours

Dawson Creek and District Hospital’s emergency department will shutter for the first time in over a month on November 6th.

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Staffing challenges will shutter Dawson Creek and District Hospital for most of the day on Thursday, according to the region’s health authority.

Northern Health posted to Facebook on Wednesday, November 5th at 5 p.m. to announce the closure, which will occur starting at 5 a.m. on November 6th. 

The emergency department is scheduled to re-open at 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

This is the first closure at the hospital in little over a month, after a previous shuttering on October 2nd for the same reason.

In total, Northern Health emergency wards closed for a total of four times throughout October, and 650-plus hours in 2025.

People in the Dawson Creek area who need life-threatening emergency care should call 9-1-1 for transport to the nearest available and appropriate facility.

Additionally, patients without a primary care provider can call Northern Health’s virtual primary and community care clinic at 1-844-645-7811 to access a family doctor or nurse practitioner seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Indigenous people and their family members living in B.C. with limited or no access to their own doctors can make virtual appointments through First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day program by calling 1-855-344-3800 seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Northern BC residents can also book an appointment to see a pharmacist for 21 minor ailments and prescription contraceptives through the book a pharmacist program.

Patients who aren’t sure whether their condition would warrant an emergency room visit or who need health advice can call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 or visit HealthLinkBC’s website.
