PM meets with Petronas CEO to discuss LNG Canada expansion
Prime Minister Mark Carney has met with the chief executive of Petronas, Tengku Muhammad Taufik, to discuss the potential expansion of LNG Canada’s Kitimat facility.

KITIMAT, B.C. — Prime Minister Mark Carney has met with the chief executive of Petronas to discuss the potential expansion of LNG Canada’s Kitimat facility.
In an October 27th news release, the Office of the Prime Minister described the meeting with Tengku Muhammad Taufik as part of ongoing efforts to “expand our partnership and strengthen Canada’s role as a reliable energy supplier.”
Petronas, Malaysia’s state-owned energy company, is one of the world’s largest energy producers and a major investor in the first phase of LNG Canada, a $40 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Kitimat.
The meeting follows last month’s announcement that the LNG Canada expansion is among the first projects to be reviewed by the federal government’s newly established Major Projects Office (MPO).

The MPO aims to fast-track developments considered to be in the national interest by streamlining approvals and financing within a two-year window.
The government has said that if approved, phase two would double the Kitimat facility’s production capacity, potentially making it the second-largest LNG operation in the world in terms of production.

According to the federal government, the project could attract new investment, create jobs and provide lower-carbon energy to global markets.
The federal government has also stated that emissions from the expansion are projected to be 35 per cent lower than the world’s best-performing LNG facilities and 60 per cent lower than the global average.
The first shipment of LNG departed the Kitimat facility at the end of June 2025.
