Newly formed extortion task force investigating Surrey, B.C., shooting

SURREY — British Columbia’s new provincial extortion force is investigating after a Metro Vancouver business reported having shots fired at its property.

Police in Surrey, B.C., say staff from a business in the 13000 block of 76 Avenue reported the shooting Tuesday after noticing signs that the building had been shot at.

Investigators at the scene have confirmed that an exterior door at the business had suffered damage from gunshots likely from overnight, and the provincial extortion task force is taking the lead in the case.

No one was injured in the shooting.

The province and RCMP announced the launch of the task force on Sept. 17 after a spate of extortions and related violent cases targeting the South Asian community.

Surrey’s mayor had announced just days before the launch of the task force that the city has set aside a $250,000 reward fund for information leading to convictions in the investigation of local extortion cases.

Police in the city said at the time that they are looking into 44 such cases, including 27 involving shootings.

Last week, police in Abbotsford, B.C., announced its own extortion task force, saying the city received 38 reports of similar cases dating back to November 2023.
