FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The second annual Summer Scrap Drive for the Fort St. John Hospital didn’t raise as much money as the first, but organizers say they still noticed positive changes compared to the prior event.

According to a press release from the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation, the event — which saw ABC Recycling collect scrap metal throughout the summer in support of the foundation — raised $22,102 in 2025.

Despite that being a decrease from the $26,371 raised last year, organizer and ABC Recycling commercial buyer McLean Welsh said there was a sharp increase in engagement from the general public.

“We saw a lot more donations from the general public this year compared to last year,” Welsh said.

“What I really noticed was that this year the engagement from the public was a lot more – lots of phone calls in the office and many small loads that came in for donation. The people are now behind this drive and it can only go up from here.”

The release says roughly 150 tonnes of metal were donated. Kelly Amboe, the hospital foundation’s executive director, is thanking ABC Recycling for taking care of the ‘heavy lifting’ involved with the fundraiser.

“The generosity of our community continues to amaze us – we’re so grateful for everyone who contributed.”

Other upcoming fundraising events for the hospital foundation include the 2025 Be An Angel gala on November 8th and the 2025 Light A Moose Radiothon — in partnership with 100.1 Moose FM, a subsidiary of Moose Media, which also owns Energeticcity.ca — from November 19th to 21st.
