CHETWYND, B.C. —  Firefighters are tackling a spreading, ‘out of control’ wildfire south of Chetwynd.

The Bluff Creek blaze was only 0.2 hectares when it was discovered on Wednesday, September 3rd, but has now ballooned to 19 hectares today (Thursday, September 4th).

The ‘out of control’ designation means the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) expects the fire to “spread beyond the current perimeter or control line.”

It suspects the fire, which is west of Highway 29, was caused by lightning.

There are three ‘initial attack crews’ responding to the incident, using helicopters and heavy equipment to fight the flames.

This comes amid a special air quality warning covering the Peace region due to smoke from wildfires around the province.
