FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — An old laundromat has been demolished in Fort St. John.

The Maytag Laundry facility located on 100th Street near Peace Parcel Services was demolished, beginning on Thursday, August 21st.

According to longtime North Peace resident and Fort St. John councillor Trevor Bolin, the facility was built and first opened in the 1970s, with an addition added to the building later in the 1990s.

It closed a few months prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The land was eventually purchased by an oil company, Bolin said, with the intent of tearing it down.

He speculated that the soil beneath the laundromat was contaminated by a gas station that used to stand next to the laundromat during the 1960s and 70s.
