FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The organizers of the 78th North Peace Fall Fair say the annual event is important for fostering a strong sense of community for people in the region.

Randa Braun and Connie West appeared on the August 8th episode of This Week in the Peace to discuss the upcoming event, which is being held from August 15th to 17th this year at the North Peace Fair Grounds in the North Peace Regional Park on Rose Prairie Road.

“We’ve maintained the ‘old-time fair feel,’ and that’s something you can’t really find anywhere very often anymore,” Braun said. “It feels nostalgic, too, when you come, and so I think that’s something unique to us.”

Attractions at the weekend fair include tractors and animals for children to interact with, crafts and artwork created by Fort St. John residents for sale and an array of competitions like pet and animal showcases.

“We say there’s something for everyone, because there really is,” Braun said when asked about the competitions. “We have a book and it is just packed full of different events, so even if you’re not into animals, there are other things to do.”

West says the fair blends the rural and urban parts of the North Peace, allowing city kids to learn about farm life and vice-versa.

“It just piques an interest in young people [by showing them] things they might not even realize happen,” she said, citing her daughter learning about canning after a past Fall Fair as an example.

“I find that it really opens up people’s eyes as to how things work on a farm, how things go farm-to-table, and so many people are so far removed from the farm these days that they just don’t have a clue.”

Tickets to the fair cost $10 per adult per day, or $5 per day for seniors and kids ages six to 16 years old. Anyone younger than six can enter for free with an adult. Tickets will only be available at the gate and cash will be required to purchase them.
