Severe thunder storm warning issued for North Peace region

Updated, August 12th, 3:45 p.m.: The severe thunderstorm warning has ended.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — North Peace residents are being warned to keep an eye out for thunderstorms, hail and possible flying debris.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the region, saying it began tracking a storm system at 2:13 p.m. capable of producing nickel-sized hail, strong gusts of wind and heavy rain.

The storm was discovered ten kilometres east of Prespatou, moving to the east at roughly 45 kilometres per hour.

Residents are urged to take immediate cover if they see a thunderstorm approaching and to protect themselves from hail and flying debris if they have to be outside.

Motorists are also being cautioned to drive carefully as hail and heavy rainfall can reduce visibility on roads.

According to the hourly forecast for Fort St. John, any thunderstorms that reach the area are expected to peter out by 11 p.m. Tuesday, August 12th, although the rain is expected to continue through August 13th.
