FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A Fort St. John Special Olympics coordinator has been named Co-op Community Champion for August.

Kathy Turney, who has been involved with the local Special Olympics for roughly a decade, was nominated for her dedication to supporting athletes with special needs in the community.

According to her nomination letter, Turney “has been local coordinator for several years.”

“She goes over and beyond to help the athletes with special needs… she gives her heart and soul to the program, making sure everyone is involved.”

Upon hearing the nomination letter read to her, Turney admitted she was taken aback.

“Oh gosh, I’m a little bit shocked,” she said. “That’s awesome.”

Turney explained she was inspired to become involved with the Special Olympics because of a family member.

“We have a special needs son who participates,” she said.

The Co-op Community Champion program recognizes individuals in Fort St. John who make meaningful contributions to their community.

Congratulations to Kathy Turney for being named August’s Co-op Community Champion. Each month, the winner is featured on Energeticcity.ca and receives up to $100 in vouchers from the Co-op.
