FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Huskies have signed a new player they feel will fit into their style of play for the upcoming season.

The club announced on Facebook the team have signed forward Kooper Volk, a native of Edmonton who played with the Cincinnati Junior Cyclones of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) in 2024-25.

Huskies head coach Todd Alexander told Energeticcity.ca the 19-year-old Volk was recruited as a result of his performance at the Western Elite Hockey Showcase camp in May.

Alexander says Volk’s ”good work ethic” is perfect for the Huskies’ club culture, as the team look for its sixth Strike Group North West Junior Hockey League (NWJHL) championship in seven seasons.

“He’s got a good motor,” said Alexander. “He goes into the net hard. He likes to get in on the forecheck which is also a big thing for our hockey club and the style that we play.

“He also has good intelligence of the game, where he understands positioning. [He played] multiple positions down there.”

Last season, Volk had five goals and three assists for eight points in 32 games with the Cyclones, who finished fifth in the USPHL’s Great Lakes Division with 12 wins, 29 losses and one overtime loss for 29 points. He also registered 55 penalty minutes.

Volk’s best season was with the Whitecourt Wolverines U-18 AA squad in 2022-23, where he had eight goals and 10 assists in 30 regular-season contests.

“He’s got a good understanding of the ice on where to be, and a good base for structure that we’ll be able to work with next year,” said Alexander. “He’ll fit right into the culture that we’ve created on this hockey club, and I think that he’ll thrive in this system.”

More information about the Huskies is available on the club’s Facebook or Instagram pages and website.
