FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A local flower shop owner is selling her business to spend more time with family.

Tammy Hordy has been running The Flower Hut in Fort St. John since 2020, which was on her “list of dreams.”

Although she has not yet found a buyer, Hordy says she wants to sell the business to move back to Calgary and spend more time with her family and young grandchildren.

“I’ve been living out here for about five years … and I’m getting very much homesick, I miss them,” said Hordy.

After 30 years’ experience as a florist, Hordy says her time running the flower shop has given her the ability to give back to the community.

“I’m all about the community here in Fort St. John, I was welcomed in and I like to give back,” said Hordy.

She has done this through her Bouquet a Day initiative, where customers buy flowers and the shop then gifts them to random people.

“You don’t know what they’re going through and a little bouquet can really raise someone’s spirits,” said Hordy.

The business shares stories of the initiative, which is designed to encourage small acts of kindness, on its Facebook page.

“We had one gentleman who came in and donated [four bouquets to single mothers] because they’re such hard workers and they don’t always get appreciated,” said Hordy.

Hordy says she will likely continue working as a florist in the future, but has no immediate plans.

Any interested buyers can contact Hordy at the store’s number at 250-785-1104.

Hordy said she is also willing to continue working with the new owners after the purchase to ensure the business’s stability.
