Several wildfires in northeast B.C. grow, two others extinguished
Several northeast B.C. wildfires, including some of the largest in the province, have grown – but the BC Wildfire Service says others have been extinguished.

FORT NELSON, B.C. — Several northeast B.C. wildfires, including the largest in the province, have grown recently, but the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says others have been extinguished.
As per the latest update to the BCWS website, the Etcho Creek wildfire has now burned 262,733 hectares, up from 250,020 hectares.
The fire – listed as an overwintering blaze from a previous season on the BCWS website – has consistently been one of the largest in the province since it was found to have reignited on May 2nd.

It increased sharply in size in late June after merging with another wildfire in the region.
The other fires in the northeast that have grown are as follows:
- The Fort Nelson River South fire has burned 12,423 hectares, up from 12,409 hectares.
- The Ekwan Creek wildfire has burned 152 hectares, up from eight hectares.
- The Townsoitoi Creek fire has burned 4,138 hectares, up from 1,891 hectares.
- The Fontas River wildfire has burned 1,660 hectares, up from 737 hectares.
No evacuation orders or alerts are currently in effect as a result of any of these blazes.
Latest Stories
Meanwhile, the Kiwigana River wildfire has reportedly been extinguished. The blaze burned more than 4,000 hectares before being downgraded from ‘out of control’ to ‘being held.’
The Sundance Lake fire, which burned a total of 60 hectares, has also been extinguished.
