SURREY — RCMP say British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office has been called in after officers shot and killed a man at a home in Surrey after responding to a reported assault on Monday evening.

Police say they were called to the home in the Metro Vancouver suburb, where officers shot a man who had a weapon, and he died of his injuries despite being treated by paramedics at the scene.

Surrey Mounties say officers found the body of a woman in the home “immediately” after the shooting.

An RCMP statement says the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is now probing the woman’s death.

Investigators say evidence indicates the assault was a case of intimate partner violence involving a couple in their 60s who lived in the home.

The police watchdog will investigate what occurred in the man’s death, while homicide investigators will take over the case involving the woman’s death.

Sgt. Freda Fong says the deaths were not the outcome anyone hoped for, and police believe the incident was isolated, with “no ongoing risk to the public.”
