DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — People in Dawson Creek are being warned of the risk of flooding in the city.

Environment Canada is forecasting showers and rain between June 12th and June 14th.

On June 11th, the City of Dawson Creek said the rainfall, paired with the ongoing level-four drought, could lead to flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

A level-four drought is one of the most serious drought levels in B.C., according to the city.

“The long stretch of dry weather has made the ground hard and plants dry, which means the land can’t soak up water as well,” it said.

“As a result, there’s a higher chance of flooding when the rain arrives.”

According to the city, residents should check their property’s gutters, downspouts and storm drains to allow drainage.

People are also encouraged to prepare an emergency kit with medications, IDs, flashlights, chargers, snacks and water.

Valuables and important documents should be moved to higher ground or in waterproof containers.

Residents in flood-prone areas should use sandbags around basement doors and ground-level windows.

Free sandbags are available at the city yard waste collection site at 949 99th Avenue. Residents should also bring a shovel to help.

Other advice includes understanding current insurance plans and checking sump pumps work properly.

“City crews are keeping a close eye on the situation and getting things ready in case there is a lot of water runoff,” said the city.
