Evacuation alert issued for County of Grande Prairie due to Kiskatinaw River fire

Residents in a portion of County of Grande Prairie near the B.C. border are being advised to prepare for a potential evacuation due to a wildfire near the Kiskatinaw River.

GRANDE PRAIRIE, ALTA. — Residents in a portion of the County of Grande Prairie near the B.C. border are being advised to prepare for a potential evacuation due to a fire.

According to an emergency alert from the province of Alberta, a wildfire in B.C. seven kilometres west of the provincial border is being pushed east by winds.

That fire – called the Kiskatinaw River fire by the BC Wildfire Service – has burned 115 hectares so far, and has also led to an evacuation alert being issued by the Peace River Regional District (PRRD).

“This alert is in effect for everyone located north of Township Road 720 to Township Road 732, east of the B.C.- Alberta border to Range Road 130,” the provincial alert reads.

Residents in the area are urged to prepare for a potential evacuation by fueling their vehicles and gathering their “pets, important documents, medications, medical devices and enough food and water to be away from [their] home for at least seven days.”

No evacuations are currently required. The latest updates will be posted to the alert page on the province of Alberta’s website.
