SALMON ARM — A 17-year-old male has died in a 60-metre fall on Bastion Mountain in British Columbia’s Shuswap region.

RCMP in Salmon Arm say officers responded to the scene of a “tragic” hiking incident on Monday involving three local teenagers.

Police say friends were hiking when the victim, who was walking ahead of the other two, disappeared near the top of the cliff and is believed to have slipped and fallen.

The father of one of the friends found the teen’s body at the bottom of the cliff.

Staff Sgt. Simon Scott, with Salmon Arm RCMP, says in a statement issued Tuesday that they are “deeply saddened” by the tragic loss of a young life and it will “greatly affect” the community.

This is second such tragedy over the long weekend, with police saying a hiker died Saturday in North Vancouver’s Mount Seymour backcountry after slipping and falling hundreds of metres while she tried to retrieve her cellphone.
