DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — Several months after preparations began to launch its ‘Wheels of Hope’ program in Dawson Creek, the Canadian Cancer Society is still looking for volunteer drivers in the region.

The program connects cancer patients without access to transportation to treatments with volunteers willing to give them a ride at no cost.

The society first announced it was recruiting volunteers to bring the initiative to Dawson Creek in January. It’s already been implemented successfully in several other communities across B.C., including Prince George.

As of a late-January interview with volunteer coordinator Mark Kahan, six volunteers were needed within the Peace region to launch the program locally.

Energeticcity.ca learned through email correspondence on April 8th that despite “interest in the program,” not enough volunteer drivers have come forward.

Prospective volunteers need a valid driver’s licence with three or fewer demerits and will be asked to commit to either a half-day or full-day shift each week. Shifts are available Monday through Friday.

Anyone who lives within a one-hour drive of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital can volunteer with the program, regardless of whether they’re residents of Dawson Creek or elsewhere.

Volunteers will be required to use their personal vehicles, but they can also get reimbursed for their mileage and receive tax receipts from the society in exchange for their work.

People who are interested in volunteering with the ‘Wheels of Hope’ program are encouraged to visit the Canadian Cancer Society website.
