FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Elaine McEachern of Baldonnel Elementary has been selected as Pita Pit’s Teacher of the Month for March due to her selfless dedication to students.

She has been teaching grades three and four at Baldonnel for a year and a half and attended the school in her youth from 1983 to 1987.

According to McEachern’s nomination letter, she takes a personal interest in the students whether they are in her class or not by providing lunches to those who need them and sending cookies home to families going through hard times.

“If she feels she can help make their experience at school a better one she does what she can to do just that,” the letter reads.

After hearing of her nomination, McEachern was surprised and appreciated the kind words in the letter.

“It’s a surprise, I’m just a little shocked, I have no words,” said McEachern.

McEachern attended Northern Lights College, where she received her associate of arts degree, before pursuing an undergraduate and master’s degree at Simon Fraser University.

The nominated teacher says she originally wanted to be a geologist before her high school counsellor encouraged her to become a teacher.

“[My counsellor said] go to the local college, get a teaching degree, and give back to your community because your community has always helped you, so you can give a little bit back,” said McEachern.

Since then, she has been an active teacher for almost 30 years, and says the job allows her to give back to the community.

“It’s the best profession there is; helping build your community from the ground up is just a really good feeling and from somebody who has benefited from community support, it’s nice to be on the giving back end of things,” said McEachern.

Congratulations to Elaine McEachern for being named March’s Pita Pit Teacher of the Month.

The monthly event is part of Moose Media and Pita Pit Canada’s mission to honour the teachers in the community.
