FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — A local figure skating club is set to host a musical special based on a motion picture smash hit.

Fort St. John Figure Skating Club (FSJFSC)  will present its semi-annual ice show on April 25th, centered around the film Barbie.

Based on the popular Mattel toy, the 2023 film starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, made over $1 billion dollars at the box office and received eight Academy Award nominations.

FSJFSC coach Jennifer Hammond says the club is hard at work to present the show to the public after finishing its competitive season in Kelowna last weekend.

“We typically do a big ice show like this every other year,” said Hammond. “Because it is such a big production and takes up so much of our time, we really only have enough [time] to dedicate every other year to it.

“This ice show, it’s more themed to the movie, rather than Barbie in general.  If you’ve watched the film you’ll see some of the scenes that have similarities to the movie.”

There will be two performances on April 25th: a matinee with schools from School District 60 invited, and an evening performance.

With 85 skaters both from FSJFSC’s learn-to-skate CanSkate program and graduating skaters, the ice show will be a way to “celebrate” the success of another season, says Hammond.

Admission to both performances is free, although a donation of non-perishable food will be accepted for a local food bank yet to be determined.

The Barbie Ice Show presented by FSJFSC will take place on April 25th, with performances at 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the North Peace Arena.

Further details about the FSJFSC are available on the team’s website.
