Cameron Lake sets sights on recreational ‘family activity day’ festival

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Cameron Lake Outdoor Education Centre is preparing to host its first annual recreational festival, offering fun competitions and family activities. 

The Cameron Lake centre’s outdoor education coordinator, Lorenne Hamre, hopes the festival will become a yearly celebration for the whole family. 

“The festival is intended to be a family activity day and also have a competitive aspect to it, where we would invite mountain bikers and have a series of trail challenges and some online on-water obstacle courses for paddle boards, canoes and kayaks,” says Hamre.

She describes the festival as a fundraiser for the camp’s upcoming projects. 

“We’re looking to raise funds through that process so that we can put it towards our projects to complete them, to bring them to fruition,” says Hamre. 

One of the projects includes redeveloping a rustic challenge course for students to participate in obstacle activities. 

“With its deterioration over the ages, we had to knock it down and we’re looking at replacing it with a professional specially-developed unit that gets safety checked every year and made for more modern equipment so that it can last longer,” explains Hamre. 

Located roughly 110 kilometres from Fort St. John, the camp occasionally caters to School District 60 classes throughout the year but is also available to the public for family rentals, events, weddings and reunions during the summer months.

Although a date for the fundraiser has not been announced yet, Hamre expects the event to be held around July 2026. 

The festival will require volunteers to collect sponsorships, manage activity stations and assist with set up and removal.
