CHETWYND, B.C. — As temperatures rise across the Peace region going into the weekend, Avalanche Canada is warning of an increased risk of danger in the backcountry.

The agency says there haven’t been any reports of avalanches in the area yet, but fresh snow falling in combination with “strong southwest alpine winds” have created deep deposits of new snow and snow slabs.

As such, there is a “considerable” risk of causing an avalanche in alpine areas on Friday, February 21st, according to the warning.

The agency is also reporting a “moderate” risk of human-caused avalanches at and below the treeline level for the 21st.

On Saturday and Sunday, the risk level will increase to “considerable” at the treeline and below it, while staying at that same level in alpine areas.

Backcountry users are urged to avoid alpine areas for the day. To read more about the warning, visit Avalanche Canada’s website.
