FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Peace region’s extreme cold weather warning is being extended until Wednesday morning due to continuing cold and wind chills close to -40C.

The warning was first issued by Environment Canada on January 31st, and a previous extension was received for February 3rd and Tuesday, February 4th, but it has now been extended again until February 5th.

Environment Canada is alerting residents of Fort St. John and Dawson Creek that extreme cold like this “puts everyone at risk” and advises them to dress in warm clothes with a wind-resistant outer layer.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” says the alert.

The cold temperatures and light winds will continue to bring very cold wind chills with temperatures slightly warmer during the daytime, but will remain low overnight and into the mornings.

Residents are also advised of the risks the cold weather imposes on pets.
