FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has opened applications for “smokejumpers” in Fort St. John and Mackenzie.

Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada, have a valid first aid certificate and Canadian driver’s license, and have worked as wildfire fighters for at least one season.

The service is asking for applicants with “preferred qualifications,” such as an occupational First Aid Level 3 certificate, a valid Wildfire Danger Tree Assessor ticket, a valid basic chainsaw operator ticket, a minimum of two seasons of fire fighting experience, resource sector education, and military experience.

Experienced firefighters are encouraged to apply before January 13th, 2025. 

According to the provincial government, smokejumpers are trained to parachute from aircraft to access wildfires in remote or difficult-to-reach locations. 

The BCWS employs around 70 smokejumpers yearly.
