FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Local artist Lane Casavant Moose FM’s Dub Craig on the January 10th episode of This Week in the Peace to discuss her Realm of Fantasy exhibit opening that evening.

Casavant, who describes herself as more of a crafter than an artist, says she has always been interested in art but found it hard to make time after starting a family.

She says coming back to doing art has felt like starting over again.

“It’s like anything, anything, the more you do it, the better you get at it, then you quit it, and you have to figure out again how to do things,” said Casavant.

According to Casavant, she likes to create all kinds of artwork, but woodcarving is her favourite, and it will be featured at the exhibit.

Casavant’s grandfather is described as one of her biggest influences and introduced her to woodworking as a teenager.

Casavant says she got her inspiration for the exhibit from “Lord of the Rings” and other fantasy media, as well as interesting sights she saw while driving. From this, Casavent says to expect depictions of fairies, dragons, and other fantasy creatures in the art show.

When asked about working on the exhibit with Valerie Ross, Casavant says she was anxious to work with Voss because of her talent as an artist.

“I was so nervous. I call myself a crafter and thought ‘it was going to be ‘the craft lady’ and the artist,’” Casavant joked.

Casavant teamed up with Ross for the exhibit three years ago, joining the “Flying Colours” group. The gallery’s then curator, Florencia Ormeno, approached Casavant and got the two together.

The exhibit’s opening reception is free and scheduled for January 10th, 2025, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Afterward, the exhibit will run until February 1st, 2025.

Peace Gallery North is located at 10015 100th Avenue.
