CHETWYND, B.C. — Warm temperatures this week have led to a warning from Avalanche Canada for backcountry users in the Peace Region.

According to the agency, “wind slabs” are forming along eastern-facing slopes in the region, leading to an increased risk of human-triggered avalanches.

The agency’s website says the risk of avalanches is “considerable” in both alpine and treeline areas for Wednesday, January 8th.

The risk in alpine areas will stay consistent throughout Thursday and Friday. At the treeline level, the risk is reportedly set to decline slightly on Thursday before returning to a “considerable” rating Friday.

There’s also reportedly a “moderate” risk of avalanches below the treeline level on Wednesday and Friday.

More details about the warning can be found on Avalanche Canada’s website.
