FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A pregnant horse rescued in Fort St. John was one of the most memorable rescues of the year for the BC SPCA.

Four stories from across the province were highlighted in the animal rescue society’s year-end press release, including Spirit, the pregnant mare rescued from a logging road in Fort St. John in June.

When she was found, 10 kilometres up the road, she had lesions, welts and hives across her body, especially on her chest. After being rescued, she was treated by a veterinarian, and birthed a healthy foal named Journey.

“It was an incredibly collaborative effort, from the Conservation Officer who contacted us about Spirit to the volunteer foster who drove her truck and trailer up a logging road to pick her up and bring her to her farm,” BC SPCA’s senior manager of Northern B.C. and the Kootenays Jamey Blair said.

“It was so good to be able to highlight the equine work we do. The BC SPCA is so well known for our efforts when it comes to companion animals, but we also do a lot of work with farmed animals and horses including finding them forever homes.”

After being weaned, Journey was adopted to a farm on Vancouver Island, and her mother Spirit remains with her in foster until she finds her forever home.
