FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The School District 60 (SD 60) board introduced the Ministry of Education and Childcare’s Language Modernization Guide for educators and staff during its November 18th meeting.

“The guide is intended for all staff in the education system and comes from the Ministry of Education & Childcare,” says SD 60 Superintendent Stephen Petrucci.

On July 1st, 2024, the ministry’s orders were amended to include more ‘inclusive language,’ which changed the language to policies, guidelines, and government documents that provide direction on support and services for students with disabilities or diverse abilities.

“It is not a mandatory edict but rather a guidance document on using updated terms whenever possible,” Petrucci continued.

Some of the outdated language and changed modernized language include:

  • Special needs, to “disabilities or diverse abilities”
  • Special education, to “inclusive education”
  • Students with special needs, to “students with disabilities or diverse abilities”
  • Special needs categories, to “inclusive education categories”
