City honors Métis heritage with Louis Riel Day proclamation

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John has proclaimed November 16th to be Louis Riel Day in recognition of a pivotal member of the Métis people.

The Fort St. John Métis Society appeared as a delegation before the City of Fort St. John council on November 12th, submitting a proclamation request for November 16th. 

The Society’s director, Bailie Copeland, explained how recognizing the important figure on the day of his execution opens the way for further awareness and understanding of Métis heritage, culture, and traditions.

The City of Dawson Creek proclaimed Louis Riel week during its November 4th regular meeting of council, with the Father of Manitoba recognized in the city from November 10th to 16th.
