FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — October’s Pita Pit Teacher of the Month was born and raised in Fort St. John and was drawn to teaching from his own experiences in high school.

“I found that I was actually drawn to helping people understand concepts and stuff like that, and it was always something I thought I might want to do,” explains North Peace Secondary School (NPSS) Physics and Robotics teacher Brant Churchill.

Churchill, whose mother was also a teacher, has been teaching at NPSS for more than fifteen years.

Parents of his students say Churchill “is one of those teachers that students will remember as their favourite.” He says he always appreciates when they understand what he’s doing and why.

“You are trying to do your best for every kid possible in your class, so it’s always nice to hear from former parents, former students, whichever, or current ones, that know you’re trying you’re best, and hopefully you’re making a difference with them.”

Outside of normal education hours, Churchill also helps his Robotics students compete in Skills Canada competitions.

Last school year, his team won fourth place in the country at the national Skills Canada competition in Quebec City.

Churchill says he plans to assemble a team to take part in the competition in 2025.

“It’s really fun. The kids put a lot of hours into it,” he says. “We’ll have our regionals usually at the end of January, early February, then March goes into provincials, and then, usually, May for nationals.”

“We’re hoping this year we can get back to nationals again, but one step at a time of course.”

Congratulations to Brant Churchill for being named October’s Pita Pit Teacher of the Month. Anyone looking to nominate a teacher who deserves recognition can go to Energeticcity.ca.
