FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Workers from Nenan Dane zaa Deh Zona Family Services Society are playing Santa and calling on the community to be helpers while they participate in a local initiative this holiday season.

Family Navigator Brandi Kennedy from the society began the group “Christmas Gifts for Kids in Care—FSJ” in 2017.

Kennedy began the initiative based on her own experiences as a foster child. As a Family Navigator, Kennedy helps provide support for foster children and families.

Her initiative supports around 40 children from the Fort St. John Area, and she has recruited society staff in 2024 to help her in the endeavour.

“I think it’s just important for every child to feel like they belong and to feel loved and that they’re loved and supported,” said Kennedy. “At first, it started with kids in group homes, and then it’s kind of grown from there.”

“People want to help. They want to do something for foster kids but [might not] have the capacity to foster themselves. It’s just kind of a way that they can show love to the fostering community”

Sponsors can see potential children, who remain anonymous, on the Facebook page. Based on their profiles, they can volunteer to sponsor Christmas stockings and hampers.

The donating person or group can then provide gifts based on the child’s profile.

No donation is refused, and gift cards from local businesses and stores are welcome for the stockings.

“I’m never, ever surprised people come through for us every single year,” said Kennedy. “Even when kids come into care close to Christmas, [people will] jump into action to make sure those kids are loved and cared for.”

“Foster parents have one less thing to worry about, and it’s awesome.”

Those interested in giving gifts can join the Facebook group “Christmas Gifts for Kids in Care — FSJ” or reach out to Kennedy by email at kennedibrandy@hotmail.com

Presents can be dropped off at the Nenan Dane Family Services office, located at 10515 102nd Street in Fort St. John, until Sunday, December 15th.
