FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Huskies will wear special cancer awareness jerseys for their two home games the first weekend of November.

The jerseys, sporting a purple stripe instead of the team’s traditional yellow, will be auctioned off during the team’s “Stick it to Cancer” game on Saturday, November 2nd.

Team president Michael Bocso said proceeds from the event, which will also feature a 50/50 raffle, games, and prizes, will be donated to the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation.

According to Bocso, the club has hosted the event for about five years.

“[The motivation] stemmed from the NHL and Hockey Fights Cancer,” said Bocso. “We jumped on that train and are trying to do our part to raise funds for the foundation and the community.”

“It’s great to see [news articles] that the foundation is able to purchase new equipment and have it local here for patients who need it.”

There will be no online component for the silent auction, prompting participants who want to enter a bid to come to games against the Sexsmith Vipers and Fairview Flyers in person.

According to Bocso, games, including a bag toss and a “bunch of little games,” will be set up to help raise money.

Bidding on the jerseys will start at $100 and end after the second period of both games. Purchases will be made upon the conclusion of Saturday’s game.

Sponsors, including Home Hardware, The Hair Bin, Lone Wolf Club, and Butcher Block, have already signed up to donate prizes.

Bocso estimates that over $15,000 has been raised by the club for the foundation over the years.

The “Stick it to Cancer” game will occur at the North Peace Arena on November 2nd at 8:00 p.m.
