FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Since acquiring the Northern Lights Inn in 2017, owner Gary Patara has been deeply committed to restoring the 94-room hotel to its former glory as a cherished part of the community.

The hotel, originally known as the Fort St. John Motor Inn, opened its doors in 1980 as a premier establishment in the city, benefiting from its prime location near the courthouse. However, over the years, multiple ownership changes and a lack of investment led to the property’s decline, attracting a clientele that was not in line with the hotel’s original standards.

“When I first saw the hotel, I recognized its potential and the role it could play in the community,” says Patara, who relocated from Kamloops to Fort St. John in 2015. “After purchasing the hotel in 2017, my vision was to invest and renovate it to create a space that reflects the spirit of this city.”

Last year, Patara launched a comprehensive renovation project aimed at completely transforming the hotel. This massive overhaul included installing a new roof and façade, updating exterior lighting, and fully remodeling the rooms.

“I chose the name ‘Northern Lights Inn’ because it’s iconic and representative of the region,” Patara explains. “Inside, we’ve gone above and beyond, adding new vinyl plank flooring, beds, furniture, and TVs. We’ve even installed new porcelain stone surrounds in the bathrooms. Every room now features kitchen cabinetry with sinks, large fridges, and microwaves, and some even offer full kitchens. It’s a total revitalization.”

The renovations, which took about eight months, were a true passion project. “My goal was always to renovate the property, but it required careful planning. It’s like renovating fifteen homes all at once.”

Today, the Northern Lights Inn primarily serves long-term guests, including professionals working in the oil and gas industry. The hotel offers flexible stay options, ranging from daily to weekly and even monthly accommodations, making it an ideal choice for new arrivals to Fort St. John who are seeking a comfortable, temporary home while they search for permanent housing.

“With the nature of oil and gas projects in the region, some jobs can last for months, and our fully furnished rooms provide the perfect solution,” Patara notes. “Our guests don’t need to commit to long-term apartment leases; instead, they can enjoy the flexibility and comfort of our hotel.”
