High winds and heat increase wildfire risk in Prince George

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Prince George Fire Centre has issued a warning for the long weekend due to changing weather conditions.

Hot temperatures and high winds are now forecast across the Prince George Fire Centre, alongside sunny, warm, and dry conditions for the next several days.

“There is potential for new starts from lightning, the emergence of holdover fires from historical lightning, and it is likely that there will be increased activity on existing wildfires,” A press release on August 2nd said.

This increase in activity is especially likely in the VanJam, Robson Valley and Fort Nelson regions.

Category one open burning is currently permitted in the fire centre, but residents are reminded to use extreme caution when burning.

Residents are encouraged to report any new wildfires to the centre by calling 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or reporting the fire through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
