Blueberry River unveils exciting itinerary for cultural camp on July 15th to 19th

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. —  Blueberry River First Nation (BRFN) has announced its itinerary for its annual cultural camp slated to take place next week.

In a Facebook post from July 3rd, BRFN lists traditional workshops, cultural activities, and special guests as plans for the five days at the campsite at Pink Mountain.

Explorations into a slice of BRFN culture start at 10 a.m. each day and will include moose hide making, trapping, making bannock, dry meat making, wildlife calling, and fishing.

The afternoon, starting at 2:00 p.m. will include sewing, ribbon skirt making, beading, drum making, and medicine picking.

Competitions will be held each day at 4 p.m. and will include axe throwing, slingshot, a quad racing rally, bingo, a bow and arrow competition, and a horseshoe tournament.

For those looking to relax, a spa day will also be offered, which will include reflexology, a massage, and tea leaf reading.

Evening special guests include former National Hockey League (NHL) player and motivational speaker Theoren Fleury.

Fleury spent 16 years as a scrappy, sharpshooting forward with the NHL’s Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers.

He has spent the majority of the past 15 years being a speaker and sex abuse advocate, beginning with his public acknowledgment of past abuse involving his former junior hockey coach Graham James.

A guy who found his calling later in life, Edward Hitchins is a professional storyteller with a colourful and extensive history.

Beginning his journey into journalism in 2012 at Seneca College, Edward also graduated from Humber College with an Advanced Diploma in Print and Broadcast Journalism in 2018.  After time off from his career and venturing into other vocations, he started his career proper in 2022 in Campbell River, B.C.

Edward was attracted to the position of Indigenous Voices reporter with Energeticcity as a challenge.  Having not been around First Nations for the majority of his life, he hopes to learn about their culture through meaningful conversations while properly telling their stories. 

In a way, he hopes this position will allow both himself and Energeticcity to grow as a collective unit as his career moves forward and evolves into the next step.

He looks forward to growing both as a reporter and as a human being while being posted in Fort St. John.
