FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society (WRS) will be hosting two separate food drives during June to benefit the society’s outreach store.

WRS’ outreach store is one of only two food banks within the city,  the other being located at the Salvation Army.

The food drives will be located at the Save-On-Foods at 10345 100th Street downtown in Fort St. John.

According to WRS outreach store coordinator Lilly Lochinger, the event is one of several that will take place over the summer months.

Lochinger says although the food bank experiences a lull in donations during that time, the demand for the food bank continues at the same level.

“These are the months where all of our food disappears very quickly, and we don’t get a lot of donations,” said Lochinger. “However, we still have the exact same number of people accessing resources.”

She says non-perishable food items will be accepted, such as canned soups.  However, Lochinger adds because of the impending end of the school year, snacks are a priority item for donation.

“Cereal works as it is both a snack and breakfast,” said Lochinger. “Especially since children will be at home with their parents over the summer months. They’ll be meeting those little snacks and things to keep them going.”

“It is highly popular amongst kids and adults, it is definitely one of the more sought after items.”

Lochinger says there will be a copy of the Save on Foods flyer at the WRS desk at the store, so customers can access on-sale specials, with the organization posting them to their Facebook and Instagram pages.

This is so community residents can save some money while helping a good cause, says Lochinger adding case lot sales are very popular with residents who contribute.

“You just get some much more for the money you spend,” said Lochinger. “People are quite generous and lovely in this community and try to help wherever they can.”

The food drives will take place on June 14th and June 21st, with July and August dates to be announced soon.
