DAWSON CREEK, B.C. — The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) announced Thursday it will hold public engagement sessions in June for the Regional Climate Resiliency Plan (RCRP) to assess the potential risks associated with natural disasters.

According to a PRRD media release, the plan “aims to address these challenges and build a more sustainable and resilient future for the region by providing clear direction for staff and elected officials on areas of key importance to residents.”

The district says climate change is intensifying natural hazards like wildfires, floods and storms in the region, causing forced evacuations and frequent damage to property, infrastructure, and crops.

Chetwynd and Dawson Creek experienced floods in 2016, and Pouce Coupe experienced significant property damage from a hailstorm in 2017.

“The launch of the public engagement component of the RCRP reflects our commitment to enhancing resilience to extreme weather events such as wildfires, floods and droughts,” said board chair Brad Sterling.

Open houses will take place from June 8th to 11th, 2024, to give residents the opportunity for residents to provide input.

“We are excited to invite residents in the region to participate in the first round of public engagement,” said Sperling.

The PRRD says the RCRP will help residents, businesses and communities effectively plan and prepare for the potential impacts of climate change across all four electoral areas.

Open houses will be held in Fort St. John on Saturday, June 8th, at the Farmer’s Market from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at the Pomeroy Sports Centre from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Sunday, June 9th, open houses will be at the Chetwynd Chainsaw Carving Competition from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at the Tumbler Ridge Community Centre from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The PRRD will be at the Hudson’s Hope Community Hall on Monday, June 10th, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, June 11th, a PRRD open house will be held at the Calvin Kruk Centre in Dawson Creek from 4 to 7 p.m.

“We can shape a future for our region that is more prepared,” said Sperling.

The district also encourages residents to provide feedback on the “Have Your Say” survey
