FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – Pride Week has been declared in the District of Taylor for the first time in its history.

Lyle Goldie, president of the North Peace Pride Society, attended the district’s council meeting on May 6th to discuss Pride Week.

“It may not be for everyone, but it certainly adds to the cultural offerings of the community, and in all honesty, the Pride event is just fun. It’s a lot of colour, it brings in people from around the region, and everyone has a great time,” Goldie said.

Goldie expressed to council the society’s vision for a community that accepts everyone as they are, a vision held since the society’s creation in 2016.

The City of Fort St. John declared May 27th to June 3rd Pride Week in 2023 after a proclamation request from the society was submitted at a May 23rd, 2023, regular council meeting.

The City of Fort St. John has yet to make a similar proclamation for Pride Week 2024.

Council passed the proclamation unanimously following Goldie’s speech, officially declaring Taylor Pride Week 2024.

“Let’s do this for the first time,” Mayor Brent Taillifer said.

The society will host its ninth annual pride walk on June 1st in Fort St. John at Centennial Park starting at 2 p.m., and Taylor’s first Pride Week will begin on May 26th and end on June 1st.
