Halfway River Group joins effort to cut methane emissions in B.C.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. —The Halfway River Group has become an equity investor in Kathairos Solutions Inc.’s methane elimination technology. 

Halfway River First Nation owns the group of Indigenous companies and has limited partnerships operating throughout the province. 

The group also has a public mandate to expand economic growth and opportunities for First Nations communities across the province. 

“Halfway River Group’s investment in an innovative solution that supports oil and gas development alongside environmental stewardship is admirable,” Dick Brown, President and Chief Executive Officer at Kathairos, said in a May 14th press release announcing the partnership. 

Kathairos’ technology reduces environmental impact by replacing methane with nitrogen in driving pneumatic devices.

Pneumatic devices are tools and instruments that use compressed air, such as those used in natural gas drilling operations. 

The company operates hundreds of remote locations in Treaty 8 territory, locations that do not have access to electrical power. 

“This investment aligns with our commitment to uphold our cultural heritage and embrace environmental stewardship while encouraging the oil and gas industry to implement new technologies to reduce impacts within our traditional territory,” Chief Darlene Hunter from Halfway River First Nation said. 

Kathairos also announced a partnership with Doig River First Nation in late February to engineer sustainable solutions for methane emission reductions.
