FSJ Flight Basketball teams impress at Good Hoops Classic in Edmonton

The Fort St. John Flight basketball teams have returned after an impressive showing at the Good Hoops Classic in Edmonton from May 10th to May 12th.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Fort St. John Flight Basketball teams have returned after an impressive showing at the Good Hoops Classic in Edmonton from May 10th to May 12th. 

The club was represented by two boys teams and a girls squad from both the U15 and U17 divisions.

According to Flight president Jessalyn Moskalyk, the teams showed poise and guile in taking on some of Western Canada’s top basketball programs from Alberta, B.C., Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

“This is one of the larger tournaments on the schedule,” said Moskalyk. “I would say our level of readiness has improved compared to last season.”

The U17 Black boys team went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning each game in the round-robin and capturing first place in the tournament’s silver division.

Flight’s U15 girls squad also turned heads, winning two of three games and finishing second in their division.

Overall, teams representing Fort St. John won 14 out of 23 games in the tournament. 

Results from Good Hoops Classic:

  • U15 Boys Black: 3-1, second place in Pool E
  • U15 Boys Orange: 3-1, second place in Pool F
  • U15 Girls: 2-1, second place in Pool F
  • U17 Boys Black: 4-0, first place in Pool F
  • U17 Boys Orange: 0-4, fifth place in Pool G
  • U17 Girls: 2-1, first place in Pool F

According to its website, the Good Hoops Classic had over 180 teams at its inaugural tournament in 2019. FSJ Flight began entering teams in the competition in 2023.

Moskalyk says she was impressed with the girls’ competitiveness and with the program’s ability to be run more consistently.

“Being able to run the girls program more consistently has been a huge boost for our athletes,” said Moskalyk. “In terms of growth, our program has done very well.”

A guy who found his calling later in life, Edward Hitchins is a professional storyteller with a colourful and extensive history.
