FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Fort St. John council started the city’s 2024 sidewalk maintenance work off by awarding a contract and having staff make adjustments to accommodate the allocated budget.

At a special council meeting on May 6th, the awarded contract went to Terus Construction Ltd., which submitted the lowest bid at $431,377.54. However, the city has only allocated a budget of $200,000 for the maintenance work.

According to Chief Administrative Officer Milo MacDonald, adjustments will be necessary to keep costs within the budget.

“If council awards this contract, staff will be adjusting the quantities to keep the costs within the 2024 sidewalk maintenance budget of $200,000,” said MacDonald in the report.

According to a report to council, the city budgets for sidewalk maintenance every year, with this year’s contract covering concrete removals and replacements throughout the city.

The report says the projects have various configurations of concrete curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, including complete site restoration of asphalt and landscaping.

“This work is essential to ensure the safety of the residents and visitors using our sidewalks,” said the report.

The contract also completes third-party applications from city residents and others for curb drops of driveways.

An option for a one-year extension is included if the work goes well.

The tender was issued on March 20th, 2024, and closed on April 9th, 2024.
