Seismologist confirms industry connection to Wonowon earthquake

A seismologist with Natural Resources Canada says the earthquake outside Wonowon Saturday morning was caused by industry operations.

WONOWON, B.C. — A seismologist with Natural Resources Canada says the earthquake outside Wonowon Saturday morning was caused by industry operations.

“The BC Energy Regulator has confirmed that this is related to operations on the nearby well pad,” explains Seismologist Camille Brillon.

Earthquakes Canada’s website says the 4.4-magnitude quake happened at about 4:20 a.m. Saturday, April 13th.

It happened just north of Wonowon, about eighty kilometres northwest of Fort St. John, at a depth of three kilometres.

The website says 23 people reported feeling the quake.

Most of those people reported feeling light-to-moderate shaking, and there haven’t been any reported damages.

This is the 11th most severe earthquake to ever hit the region, according to Earthquakes Canada. 

The most severe was a 5.4-magnitude quake near Dawson Creek in 2001.
