UPDATE: Traffic delayed on Highway 97 after semi-truck spills sand

Traffic delays Friday morning on Highway 97 near Groundbirch were caused by a semi-truck full of sand tipping over.

GROUNDBIRCH, B.C. – Traffic delays Friday morning on Highway 97 near Groundbirch were caused by a semi-truck full of sand tipping over.

“Just around four in the morning, there was a semi that had tipped over,” explained Dawson Creek RCMP Constable Emma Baron.

“It was really foggy, so the guy clipped the shoulder and it spilled a whole bunch of sand from the trailers onto the road.”

DriveBC claimed the highway was reduced to single-lane alternating traffic for much of Friday morning.

At the time, Baron was unable to provide an estimate for when traffic would return to normal as Argo Road Maintenance worked to clear the road.

As of 12:00 p.m. Friday, DriveBC says the slowdown has ended.
